For anyone interested in how software should be written, I highly recommend learning about Extreme Programming (XP). Here are some good starting points:

The books:
Extreme Programming in Wiki
Wiki is a little different. Wiki contains descriptions of XP and other stuff, including discussions of patterns, projects and related issues. There is a lot of good stuff here, but it can be a little odd to read, because there are many authors and editors.

Extreme Programming is very attractive to me. I'd like to be a member of an Extreme Programming team. I'll happily join any company in the Pittsburgh area that is doing or intends to do Extreme Programming.
