CONNECTING WITH WIN 95/98

HAVE WIN95/98 CD AVAILABLE IF REQUESTED DURING SETUP

Step 1: Verify that Dial-up Networking is Installed

Click START, Settings, Control Panel.
Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon. Select
the "Windows Setup" tab, then click the Communications
option and select Details. Make sure that the "Dial-up
Networking" option is selected. If it is, go on to step 2. If
it isn't, select it and click OK. (Windows 95/98 will attempt
to install drivers, so make sure you have your installation
disks or CD ready if requested!) Now that Dial-up
Networking is installed, you may proceed to step 2.


Step 2: Verify that the Dial-up Adapter and TCP/IP Protocol are Installed

Click START, Settings, Control Panel.
Double-click the "Network" icon. Select the
Configuration tab. Both Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP
should be present. If they are, you may proceed to step 3.


To install Dial-Up Adapter, click Add, double-click
Adapter, then scroll down the list to select
Microsoft. Choose the Dial-Up Adapter and click OK.

To install TCP/IP, click Add, double-click Protocol,
select Microsoft, then TCP/IP, and click OK.
Now your Network dialog box should contain both Dial-Up
Adapter and TCP/IP. Select the Adapter, Properties,
Bindings, and make sure the TCP/IP box is checked.
You may proceed to step 3.


Step 3: Setup the Connection Icon

Click on My Computer from the desktop and double-click the
Dial-Up Networking icon. Double-click the Make New
Connection Icon. This will walk you through the 'Make New
Connection Wizard'.

Type a name for your connection icon (the title won't
affect the type of connection). Your modem (which should
have been configured when you installed Windows 95/98)
should appear in the 'Select a Modem' box. When you
click "CONFIGURE" you will get a dialog box with the same
name as your modem with 3 tabs.

Click on the 'GENERAL' tab. In the Maximum Speed section,
adjust your modem speed to your modem's capabily (i.e.
if you have a 14.4K modem, make the maximum speed 57600).
DO NOT check "Only connect at this speed". Click OK.

Click the "Next" button in the 'Make New Connection Wizard'.
Enter the phone number for the FYI location you will be
dialing ( a complete list is available on the homepage at
'Contact Us'.

Click Finish and your icon will be created.


Step 4: Setting the Dial-Up Properties

Select your newly-created connection icon, press the right
mouse button and choose Properties. The box should
be named whatever you called your connection icon.

Select the 'Server Types' tab. On the
Type of Dial-Up Server section, press the
down arrow to drop down the list box and choose PPP.

In 'Advanced Options', make sure "Log on to Network"
is NOT checked.
In 'Allowed Network Protocols', check TCP/IP.



Step 5: Configure the TCP/IP Settings

Click on 'TCP/IP' Settings.
Select 'Server assigned IP address'.
Select 'Specify name server addresses'.
For primary DNS, enter 204.179.80.2.
For secondary DNS, enter 204.179.80.3.
The Wins servers should be left 0.0.0.0.
Uncheck 'IP header compression'.
Check 'Use default gateway'.
Click OK in 'TCP/IP Settings'.
Click OK in 'Server Types'.

Click OK in the remaining dialog box, and you're almost ready
to dial!



Step 6: Dialing In and Getting Connected

Double-click on the connection icon that you
created. Enter the username and password FYI provided.
Click the CONNECT button. Your modem will dial.
A message box 'verifying your username and password' appears.
Two small computers will appear by the time in the lower right
hand corner when you are connected to FYI.


You may use Internet Explorer(a web browser)which comes with
Windows 95/98 to access URL addresses such as www.fyi.net
